Rigid Flex PCB Assembly
What Is Rigid Flex PCB Assembly

With the development of electronic technology, especially the continuous progress of electronic assembly technology, in many occasions, it is difficult for general rigid printing plate making to meet the requirements of "light", "thin", "short" and "small" of electronic products. . However, flexible printed boards have the characteristics of "light and thin" and "bendable". Rigid-flex printed boards not only have the supporting role of rigid printed boards, but also have the characteristics of flexible boards. A good deal can meet this trend. . So what is a rigid-flex board?

Rigid-flex board is a combination of soft board and hard board. It is a circuit board formed by combining a thin layered flexible bottom layer and a rigid bottom layer, and then laminating them into a single component.

Advantages OF Rigid Flex PCB Assembly

(1) The traditional flat design concept is changed and expanded to a three-dimensional three-dimensional space concept.
(2) The rigid-flex board can replace multiple connectors and multiple cables with a single component to optimize the available space.
(3) Stronger performance and higher stability. Can prevent electrostatic interference, less noise, and high reliability.
(4) It can be bent and folded without affecting the signal transmission function.
(5) The rigid-flex board can effectively reduce the overall thickness and weight, which is conducive to product miniaturization.

Application Of Rigid Flex PCB Assembly

In the civilian product market, consumer terminals are developing in the direction of being short, small, light and thin. Communications, automobiles, and medical equipment have all encountered design bottlenecks and have begun to adopt this design in large numbers. Technology can be widely used in aerospace, medical, industrial control, automotive, communications, handheld terminals and other fields.

Selection Of The Rigid Flex PCB Assembly Material

Rigid-flex board mainly requires rigid and flexible materials, and the choice of materials is mainly based on the purpose of the printed board.

(1) Selection of rigid materials
The most commonly used rigid materials in the industry are PI and epoxy substrates and corresponding prepregs. PI has a good glass transition temperature, good dimensional stability, and a small expansion coefficient in Z, but it has the shortcomings of high water absorption and poor mechanical properties, which cannot meet the use under some harsh conditions. From the perspective of prepregs, PI prepregs have high fluidity, short gel time, and process control is too difficult. Therefore, epoxy resin press plates and corresponding prepregs are selected as the rigid part of the material.

(2) Selection of flexible materials
The choice of flexible materials should have good flexibility, excellent electrical properties, appropriate thickness and excellent heat resistance. Flexible materials include flexible dielectric films, flexible adhesive sheets, copper foils, and covering layers. The commonly used dielectric films are mainly PET, PI and PTFE.

Although the cost of rigid-flex board is more expensive than traditional rigid board, it provides an ideal solution for the project. The interconnection of flexible substrates is used instead of the connection equipment of multiple PCBs. This is the key to reducing space and weight, which is exactly what many designs require.

The rigid-flex board has the characteristics of bendable and foldable, so it can be used to make customized circuits to maximize the use of the available indoor space. Using this point, the space occupied by the entire system is reduced, and the overall cost of the rigid-flex board It will be relatively high, but as the industry continues to mature and develop, the overall cost will continue to decrease, and it will be more cost-effective and competitive.
